Not so fast.
It’s my 41st Christmas season and it never gets old. The lights, the trees, the carols, the gatherings, and The Story! The story that changes all stories. God became human, so that humans could come to God. But I have one qualm with the Christmas season – it moves so quickly. I admit that a twinge of depression darkens the door of my heart on December 26th. A sadness that has no words. So I’ve decided this year that I won’t let that happen. How you ask? By slowing Christmas down.
Today I’m thinking about the fact that baby Jesus subjected Himself to:
Time - This is enough to stop us in our tracks. Jesus has always existed, but He chose to submit Himself to the confines of time. Seconds, minutes, hours, days. Sunrise, sunset, sleep. All of these constructs exist within time. Think about it: a limitless King restricted his movement to that of a mortal.
Hunger - Babies are hungry. (And all the mamas said, Amen!) The King of the Universe who had never wanted for a thing came into the earth wanting. He depended on his teenage mother for sustenance. Think about it: the woman He designed became his source of provision.
What else can you think of?
Bottom line: Christmas is the miracle of miracles. Let’s not put it behind us just yet. Take some time today, tomorrow, and in the coming weeks to marvel at the manger.
